The new toll road connecting Ngurah Rai Airport, Nusa Dua and Tanjung Benoa is now complete and has been unveiled on 23 September by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

State-Owned Enterprises Minister Dahlan Iskan said that, based on the results of his recent visit to Bali, the toll road and Ngurah Rai Airport will be ready to operate in time for the APEC summit to be held next October 1 to 8. The new 12.7 km highway project with an investment of Rp 2.4 trillion (over 200 million dollars) is the first highway built over the sea in Indonesia and is expected to benefit the economy of Bali greatly. During construction approximately 3,000 workers were directly involved and in the future the project will provide a broad multiplier effect for the economy of Bali.

The Toll Road once opened is available for the first week free of charge (till end of September) for people to try out. The first day they recorded over 115,000 users combining cars and motorcycles, but fortunately there is a separate concreted off motorbike lane!

Culture Calendar

Eid al-Adha 1434

Eid al Adha is the Muslim festival that marks the end of the pilgrimage to Makkah known as Hajj will be held on 15 October 2013.

Eid al Adha is also known as the “Feast of Sacrifice,”and it commemorates Abraham’s faith and devotion to God.
According to Muslim belief God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son, and although he was a good man and loved his son; his faith and devotion to God was strong enough that he would accommodate God’s request.

Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his own son for God caused God to spare his son’s life, and a lamb was sacrificed in his place.

Eid-ul-Adha is a sacred Muslim holiday that is celebrated around the world with prayer, sacrifice, and food.

Galungan & Kuningan Ceremony in Bali

The entire island of Bali will be daily decorated and festive activities held across the island from 23rd of October to 2nd of November 2013, when the Balinese celebrate the religious festivals of Galungan and its pinnacle, Kuningan, concetrated on Bali's many temples, including the island's mother temple, Pura Besakih.

Celebrated every 210 days according to the Hindu Saka Calendar, Galungan symbolizes the victory of Dharma over Adharma or virtue over evil which has its origin in the mythology of “Mayadenawa”. It is believed that during the ten days of Galungan, all the gods, as well as the supreme deity Sanghyang Widi, will come down to earth and join the festivities. The Balinese also believe that the spirit of ancestors and deceased relatives return to visit their homes, thus various rituals and offerings are conducted to welcome them.

As one of the most important religious activities on the island, Galungan provides the best opportunity to observe the most fascinating part of Bali’s unique culture. A visit to Bali during the festival will surely be a treat for all the senses.
