Bye-Bye plastic bags!

Bali's beaches are drowning in rubbish, and this year it's worse than ever. The Governor has committed to bringing in laws to ban plastic bags, but only if 1 million of us sign up to hold him to his word. Let's create a tidal wave of support for banning the plastic pollution.

Bali’s most iconic beaches are littered in heaps of plastic rubbish. It’s hard to imagine tourists sunbathing and surfers catching waves amidst the debris, but the monsoon has brought a tidal wave of trash to the island’s shores
But there’s a ray of hope: Activists on the ground say they have wangled a promise from Bali’s governor I Made Mangku Pastika -- if they get 1 million signatures, a law banning plastic bags will be introduced. Now it’s up to our community to make it happen!

Plastic bag bans work. Several countries already ban or restrict them, including Bangladesh and China, where use fell dramatically. Getting Bali to say bye-bye to the pollution could be the first step in making Indonesia plastic bag free. Sign this petition now and share widely -- when we reach 1 million, Avaaz will deliver the petition on the steps of the governor’s office.

Run away with High Flyers Bali Circus

Have you ever wanted to run away to the circus? Now you can while you are in Bali!

Imagine yourself as a high-flying trapeze artist, feeling the exhilaration of flying through the air before catching the hands of a fellow acrobat. You might think such a feat impossible, but once you’ve signed up to the High Flyers Bali Trapeze school you’ll learn to build confidence, overcome self doubt and develop the basics in a completely safe environment.

Trapeze is a fun activity for all the family and a chance to try something beyond the normal beach and temple activities in Bali.

High Flyers Bali Trapeze school is located in The Bali Dynasty Resort in South Kuta. They offer trapeze classes six days a week and teach flyers between the ages of 5 and 65. You can sign up for a single class to feel the rush and learn a basic trick or multiple classes if you can’t resist going further. With each class, you’ll learn more tricks and develop more skills to include catches and somersaults. Classes are kept small so that each flyer receives individual attention and the time to develop their skills.

Now you can complete your circus experience with High Flyers circus workshop. Learn to juggle, spin plates , diabolo and more. The whole circus experience is ideal for birthday parties and teambuilding and High Flyers offer packages to suit your needs.

Bali's Culture Calendar

Saraswati - 8 March 2014
This day is devoted to Dewi Saraswati, the Godess of  Science & Knowledge. Books of knowledge, manuscripts and the Wedas are blessed and special offerings are made for them.

As with other religious days in Bali, there are also ritual activities before and after the day of Saraswati itself. The day before the Saraswati is called Pengeradanaan, a day to prepare for Saraswati both spiritually and physically. Books are cleaned and properly arranged.

On Saraswati Day, the Balinese make offerings to their books. Students celebrate at school, usually in the morning. The Saraswati Day is not a day off work, so all offices are open.

The day after Saraswati is called Banyu Pinaruh. "Banyu" means water and "Pinaruh" means wisdom. Taken together, the words mean that man must have wisdom which always flows like water, and is useful for mankind. Early in the morning of Banyu Pinaruh Day, people will go the beaches, rivers and springs to purify themselves and pray for wisdom.

Pagerwesi - 12 March 2014

Pagerwesi commemorates the day upon which an ancient battle between good and evil was fought. The word "Pagerwesi" means "iron fence", and reflects the purpose of this important event: it is the day to strengthen one's fortifications against evil. The correlation between Pagerwesi and the Saraswati is that knowledge is so powerful that it must be protected from bad influences. Pagerwesi Day reminds people to be wise and more aware of the function and power of knowledge.

The Balinese celebrate the Pagerwesi ceremony every six months according to the Balinese calendar. The celebration is usually three days after the Saraswati day.

During Pagerwesi, people make special offerings for the dead who have not yet been cremated. Observances are usually held at every house compound, and at temples.

Nyepi - 31 March 2014 ( Day of Silence, Balinese New Year)

The saka calendar has a major festival called Nyepi, or the final day of the saka year. It falls on the day after the new moon on the ninth month. Nyepi is a celebrated holiday and the Balinese New Year called icaka New Year. It is a day of total silence throughout the island. Nyepi really is a celebration observed with total silence!

On Nyepi day, there is totally no activity - no traffic at all on the roads, no amusement is held the whole day long. No fires also may be lit in observance of the Nyepi and great purification and sacrificial rites are held on the day prior to Nyepi in order to exorcise evil spirits from every corner of Bali

At Nyepi in Bali, it is best to simply go with the flow, enjoy a little introspection yourself and if you are staying in one of the hectic tourist resorts such as Kuta, savour the once-a-year novelty of utter peace and quiet. Nyepi is a unique experience and there is no other day like it anywhere else in the world.
