Indonesian Independance day

On August 17th Indonesian people happily celebrate the Independence Day of Republic of Indonesia. The happiness is of their freedom from Dutch and Japanese colonisation.
On this special day everything is decorated in red and white and everyone displays large red and white flags outside their houses.
Banjars organise a clean up of the area or kerja bakti. Drains are swept, weeds are cut back, debris is burned and public areas are repainted.

An important ceremony on this day is the flag hoisting at the National Palace, televised live. Full of pomp and circumstance and conducted basically the same way each year, it is a spectacle of the greatest respect and honor for the flag and for the Republic.

Meanwhile local neighbourhoods are preparing fun games for the kids such as sack races, kerupuk-eating, eel-catching, dancing with balloons, climbing, tug-of-war, recycle creativity, etc. Each province has their own traditional games. The winner of every game will get a present or trophy from the organizer, such as books, stationary, food and drinks, or luxurious things like bikes, motorcycles  or televisions which are sponsored by large companies.

As a visitor to Bali you are always welcome to join in the neighborhood activities. Join in the fun ... and spend time getting to know the friendly locals!

MERDEKA!

New Toll road in Bali soon to be opened

A lot will agree that the new underpass has gone some way to relieve the traffic congestion however we are now awaiting the soon to be opened first toll road in Bali which we hope will further relieve the traffic congestion from the southern areas enabling people travelling from the South (Nusa Dua) to bypass the airport and Simpang Siur. This will be followed by the opening of the new airport in early October in time for APEC.

Cultural Calendar

Ramadan and Lebaran Celebrations

Idul Fitri, more commonly referred to in Indonesia as Lebaran, is the celebration that comes at the end of the Muslim month of fasting, Ramadhan. Every day during this month, Muslims around the world spend the daylight hours in a complete fast. Muslims all over the world abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs during the daylight hours.

Hari Raya Lebaran will be celebrated on the 8th and 9th of August 2013 when most of the muslims will return home and spend time with their family.

Saraswati and Pagerwesi Celebrations

Offering making, praying, feasting and the raising of penjors - large decorated bamboo poles - are among the traditions of the Balinese holidays.

Most of the Balinese holidays are dictated by the Balinese calender systems, where a year consists of 210 days. Therefore Balinese holidays like Galungan, Kuningan, Saraswati and Pagerwesi falls on different dates every year  and sometimes two times within the same year

Balinese Hindus will celebrate two important festival dates in the month of August.
Saraswati day is a traditional Balinese holiday to celebrate the day when knowledge is given by God through the beautiful goddess Saraswati. No books are to be opened on Saraswati day. Saraswati will this year be celebrated on the 10th of August 2013 and Pagerwesi Day, which falls on Wednesday 14th August  the day where Hindus strengthen their mental and spiritual fortification against evil. Pagerwesi is celebrated in larger scale in the north than in the south, including the erection of Penjors(tall decorated bamboo poles).
