Nyepi Program 2018

Saturday, 17 March 2018

Hari Raya Nyepi is the New Year for Balinese Hindus celebrating the Caka Year of 1940. On this very auspicious occasion, many ceremonies and rituals are held throughout the Island of Bali, we have detailed below the events taking place this period and hopefully can guide you to experience the local culture while in Bali.

Wednesday, 14 March 2018

One of the most important preparations for the coming New Year is the Purification Ceremony, known locally as “Melasti”, held on Wednesday, 14th of March. Offering and holy objects such as statues and “keris” line the path of the colourful procession leading to the beach for ritual cleansing. Flowers fill the beach and prayers fill the air as pilgrims cleanse themselves in the sea. You are requested to witness this ceremony with decorum, from a distance.

Friday, 16 March 2018

The climax of ritual activity is on the eve of Nyepi, the darkest night of the new moon. During these solemn, powerful hours, priests throughout Bali will perform a Tawur Agung, praying and ritually sacrificing a variety of animals to appease the demons and honor the gods is an attempt to harmonise the conflicting universal powers of good and evil.

Ogoh-Ogoh (Papier Mache) Statue Burning.

Join us for a rather special Balinese event at 5.00p.m. in front of Kertagosa Room.

Help us carry our Ogoh Ogoh (papier mache statue) around the hotel to scare away the bad spirits. We’ll provide you with a special Balinese Arak drink and a Balinese Headband and Sarong. We will end the procession on the beach and burn the Ogoh Ogoh on the Beach

Saturday, 17 March 2018

The first day of the Caka New Year, also known as Hari Raya Nyepi, is a Day of Complete Silence in Bali.  The whole island will be void of people on the streets (since it is mandatory for everyone to stay indoors) or on the hotel premises and there shall be no noise, no lights and no activities in whatsoever form. The whole island of Bali shall appear deserted and therefore it is believed that the evil spirits will pass over the island.

We seek your cooperation in observing the following mandatory rules issued by the Department of Religion of Bali during the celebration of Hari Raya Nyepi.

  1. Guests are not permitted to leave the premises of the Hotel commencing at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, 17 March 2018 to 6:00 a.m on Sunday, 18 March 2018. To do so is considered a criminal act.
  2. All guestroom night curtains are required to be fully drawn from 6:00 p.m, Saturday, 17 March 2018 to 6:00 a.m, Sunday, 18 March 2018. You are requested to keep lighting to a minimum.
  3. All guestroom balcony lights will be disconnected for the duration of the above-stated dates and times. Please do not attempt to re-activate the lights during these hours.
  4. The entire hotel’s outdoor lighting will be completely switched off following sunset on 17 March 2018 with indoor lighting (including those for outlets and public areas) kept to only a bare minimum until sunrise on Sunday, 18 March 2018.

This means that the Hotel’s swimming pool, Sunken Bar and H2O Restaurant will also be closed from 7.00 p.m, Saturday, 17 March 2018 till the following morning. Buffet Dinner will be available in the Sen5es Restaurant and Golden Lotus on the evening of the 17 March and Gracie Kelly’s will be open as normal serving a la carte.

Sunday, 18 March 2018

The second day of the Caka New Year, also known as “Ngembak Geni”, is a Day for Hindu people to do ”Sima Krama/Dharma Santi”, visiting and apologising to one another. On this occasion, you may visit a market called “PASAR MAJELANGU”, which will be held along the Kuta Beach area.  Please also be aware that, on this day, shops and restaurants will be open after 12.00 noon, but most of them might be closed.

Thank you for helping us respect Bali’s local culture and customs during this auspicious occasion. We look forward to celebrating “Hari Raya Nyepi” with you at Bali Dynasty Resort!
