Welcome to the February Edition of Bali Dynasty Resort enewsletter.

Thank you to all of our loyal guests who attended the 25th Back to Bali Dynasty Party in Perth on the 10th of February. It was a fun night and we managed to raised over AUD 7,000 to help the disadvantaged in Bali. We’d also love to thank all of our sponsors to this event, including AirAsia, Asia Escape Holidays, Helloworld and many more. An exclusive feature of the event can be read below in the charity section.

We’d love also to update you that we have been recognised in the Top 25 of the Best Family Hotels for Families in Asia and Australia in 2018 TripAdvisor's Travellers Choice Award, and received 2018 Certificate of Excellence. Also, we will attend the Perth Holiday & Travel Expo in March, so if you are in Perth, we look forward to welcoming you at our booth where you can secure great deals.

In March, the island of Bali will welcome the Nyepi Day – Day of Silence which marks the New Year according to Balinese Calendar. Grand ceremonies will be held throughout the island on the 16th, before the whole activities stop for 24 hours and the island goes completely silent making it look uninhabited on the 17th. As the St. Patrick’s Day also falls on the same day as Nyepi Day, to respect the local culture, we will throw the After Party for this special event on the 18th welcoming all guests.

All in all, we hope that you will enjoy reading the newsletter. See you soon at the resort!

Charity Update

A Big Fundraising Event for the Unfortunate People in Bali

Our biggest annual fundraising event in Perth, the 25th Back to Bali Dynasty at the Subi Sport Bar, was a big success. It was attended by over 180 loyal guests of Bali Dynasty Resort and managed to raise more than AUD 7,000 from the dinner and raffle tickets sales. A total of 82 prizes were offered by the generous sponsors, including return flights to Bali by AirAsia, holiday accommodation in Bali and tickets to many of Bali’s top attractions.

The raised fund is directed to Bali Dynasty’s Charity Account to alleviate the suffering of individuals in Bali through a collaborative work between Bali Dynasty Resort and Solemen Indonesia. Started in February 2016, the project is called “Help Friends for Life” and has been supporting many SoleBuddies with their ongoing long-term care and education as well as providing one-off donations such as wheelchairs, prosthetic legs and medical treatment. The charity biggest achievements to date are funding the Solemen House – a four bedroom haven for poor patients and families to stay at no cost; Solemen Car that transports them to the hospital for free and installing community toilets and shower blocks for the impoverished family in North Bali, giving 26 people access to basic and proper hygiene.

We’d like to thank our sponsors to this event: AirAsia, Asia Escape Holidays, Helloworld, Bintang Beer, Hatten Wines, C&M Italiano, Subi Sport Bar, Bali Safari & Marine Park, Bali Bird Park, Waterbom, Mason Adventure Tours, Bali Zoo Park, Bali Hai Cruise, Ena Dive, Odyssey Submarine, Sobek Bali Utama, Sketch & Portrait, Bali Nusa Dua Theatre, Marine Walk, Bali UTV, Vista Touristama, Taru Bali, GreenBikes Bali, Sardine Restaurant, Frockk, Dare2Wear and Ducatus.

Indonesia's national flag-carrier, Garuda Indonesia successfully maintains its 5-Star rating from Skytrax, the international air transport rating organisation based in London. Garuda Indonesia receives this "5-Star Airline" rating since 2014.

Qantas plans to launch a new daily nonstop flight between Bali and Melbourne while its low-cost-carrier (LCC) unit Jetstar adds more services on the route. The Qantas’s Melbourne-Bali is supplementing its relatively new Sydney-Bali service.

From June 23 2018, Qantas will offer a daily 737-800 service on Melbourne-Bali, with QF45 departing Melbourne in the afternoon for an evening arrival in Bali. Bali Events

Melasti Pilgrimage

In conjunction to the coming of Nyepi Day (the New Year according to Saka calendar), the whole island performs Melasti Pilgrimages. This is the procession where the Hindu people in Bali take heirlooms in long walks from temples towards the coastlines where purification rites take place. Parasols, banners and small effigies paraded along the horizon make for a stunning and only-in-Bali scene.

This year Melasti Pilgrimages will be on 14h of March 2018. Visitors can see the rituals in Kuta or Sanur beach. It is advised to check with the locals when the celebration will begin.

Omed-omedan Festival

Also known as the “festival of splashes and smooches”, the Omed-omedan Festival is a unique event to watch after observing the Day of Silence. The festival is a much-localized event, pertaining to the lesser Banjar Kaja community of Sesetan Area, around 30 minutes from the Bali Dynasty Resort. The youths take to the street where water is splashed and sprayed by the surrounding villagers, and the highlight being two sides, boys and girls, in a tug-of-war-like scene with successive pairs in the middle ‘forced’ to smooch at each shove and push.

Cultural News

Nyepi Day – 17 March 2018

Nyepi is the Balinese "Day of Silence", which is commemorated as the New Year celebration according to Saka Calendar. It is a Hindu holiday that is mainly celebrated in Bali, Indonesia. Unlike the grand New Year celebrations of other calendars, Nyepi is celebrated in complete silence, with fasting and meditation.

The island will observe Nyepi from 6am on 17th March until 6am on the following day. Local regulations concerning Nyepi require no lighting of fires (and lights must be kept low), no working, no entertainment or pleasure, and no travelling. All of this will make the island appear to be deserted.

Although Nyepi is primarily a Hindu holiday, non-Hindu residents and tourists are not exempt from the restrictions. Activities may be held with minimal noise within the hotels’ premises but it is strictly forbidden for the guests to stray outside onto the beaches or streets. The only airport in Bali remains closed for the entire day. The only exceptions granted are for emergency vehicles responding to life-threatening conditions and women about to give birth.

On the day after Nyepi, known as Ngembak Geni, social activity picks up again quickly, as families and friends gather to ask forgiveness from one another, and to perform certain religious rituals together.

Saraswati Day – 17 March 2018

This day is devoted to Dewi Saraswati, the Goddess of Science & Knowledge. Books of knowledge, manuscripts and the Vedas are blessed and special offerings are made for them.

This upcoming Saraswati Day is a special one as it coincides with the Nyepi Celebration.

The day after Saraswati is called Banyu Pinaruh. Early in the morning of Banyu Pinaruh Day, people will go the beaches, rivers and springs to purify themselves and pray for wisdom.

Pagerwesi Day – 21 March 2018

Pagerwesi is the day when the Balinese strengthen their minds and souls against evil forces. Etymologically Pagerwesi derives from the two Balinese words “pager” and “wesi”, which means fence and iron respectively. The iron fence is a symbol of strong self-protection and on Pagerwesi the Balinese focuses on building a strong personal fortification to ensure that evil doesn't enter their minds, speech and deeds.

In many regions in Bali, Pagerwesi is considered to be a really important holiday which is celebrated excessively in a similar fashion to Galungan Day.
