Charity Update

Remember Cintya, a very bright and diligent student who lives in Sanur with her grandparents and her four-year-old brother with cerebral palsy? In addition to her studies at school, she wished to do a private English course which was quite a burden as the family has only a little family income. In April 2016, we did a fundraising through the twice-a-week Gracie Kelly’s Quiz Night to pay for her one-year English course which was really successful. Since then, she has gradually improved her English proficiency.

As the first term of the school year has finished, we received pleasant news that Cintya also performed really well at school. She ranked as the Top 3 Students in her class for this term. She was rewarded with a 4 months free of tuition fee, which is a big help for the family. “I am very happy and I want to thank everyone for their help to my education,” said Cintya.

Well said Cintya, we are also glad to take part in sponsoring your education.

Cintya, is just one of the several people who has benefitted from the “Help Friends for Life” programme, a charity commitment between Bali Dynasty Resort and Solemen. Since launched in February 2016 at the 23rd Back to Bali Dynasty Party, the charity has been successful in helping individuals overcome their obstacles, by providing extended support and one time off donations. The support is made possible by the generosity of our guests who are attracted to the personal nature of each case and the feeling that they really are making a difference.

Cultural News

Saraswati Day – 21 Jan 2017

This day is devoted to Dewi Saraswati, the Goddess of Science & Knowledge. Books of knowledge, manuscripts and the Vedas are blessed and special offerings are made for them. Students celebrate at school, usually in the morning. The Saraswati Day is not a day off work, so many offices who work on Saturday will remain open.

The day after Saraswati is called Banyu Pinaruh. Early in the morning of Banyu Pinaruh Day, people will go the beaches, rivers and springs to purify themselves and pray for wisdom.

Pagerwesi – 25 Jan 2017

Pagerwesi is the day when the Balinese strengthen their minds and souls against evil forces. Etymologically Pagerwesi derives from the two Balinese words “pager” and “wesi”, which means fence and iron respectively. The iron fence is a symbol of strong self-protection and on Pagerwesi the Balinese focuses on building a strong personal fortification to ensure that evil doesn't enter their minds, speech and deeds.

In many regions in Bali, Pagerwesi is considered to be a really important holiday which is celebrated excessively in a similar fashion to Galungan Day.

Siwaratri Day – 26 Jan 2017

Siwaratri, often referred to as the 'night of Siwa', is an auspicious time for introspection and meditation during which the Hindus of Bali pray for forgiveness of their earthly sins and for support and strength from Siwa in order to reach their higher selves.

Siwaratri is normally celebrated throughout Bali where all devotes pray and do not sleep throughout the night. Therefore government offices and schools are normally closed on the following day.
