Saraswati Day is a revered celebration dedicated to Saraswati, the Hindu goddess associated with knowledge, music, arts, wisdom, and learning. This auspicious event occurs every 210 days.

Saraswati is believed to play a crucial role in the cosmic trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, contributing to the creation, maintenance, and regeneration of the universe. On this sacred day, expressions of gratitude are offered to the goddess. The name "Saraswati" derives from the combination of two Balinese words: "sara" and "swaandthi," signifying 'the one who possesses all knowledge' or 'the one who imparts meaning.' In certain regions, the name is interpreted as 'one who flows with knowledge,' symbolizing the bestowal of understanding upon those dedicated to learning.

The goddess is symbolically depicted as a beautiful four-armed figure engaged in playing the zither and holding sacred scriptures—a representation of an insatiable thirst for knowledge.

Central to the festivities is the practice of locals, irrespective of their location, presenting offerings. Whether at school, home, the office, farm, or temples, diverse offerings are made. However, a common thread among them is the placement of offerings within books and between the pages of holy scriptures. This ritual underscores the celebration of knowledge that one can derive from these revered texts.

On this day, it is customary for Balinese individuals to refrain from reading or writing in books as a gesture of devotion, offering all books to Saraswati. As night descends, religious books are read in temples or homes to pay homage to the goddess. This year, Saraswati will be celebrated on the 16th of December, 2023.

Charity Update

Novi, who is soon turning 18, is a second-year senior high school student, or 11th grader, from Gianyar.

Novi has an older brother who recently graduated from senior high school but faces challenges in securing stable employment to assist with Novi’s school fees. Furthermore, he has outstanding debts from his own senior high school expenses. Novi’s younger sister is currently in kindergarten.

Novi's parents, who themselves discontinued their education, work as laborers and earn less than the minimum wage through various manual labor activities such as working in rice fields or construction sites. Novi, since starting senior high school as a freshman last year, has been unable to pay her school fees, accumulating a debt of $350, which may force her to drop out if not addressed.

Despite these challenges, Novi is passionate about Culinary Arts and aspires to become a chef, specializing in tourism at a vocational senior high school. Cooking has been her hobby, especially since her parents are occupied during the day. Although her primary interest lies in the culinary arts, Novi has chosen Spa Club as her extracurricular activity, appreciating the intricacies of professional spa treatment.

With only one motorbike in the family, Novi relies on rides from friends to commute to school. To contribute to her family's income, she engages in tasks such as making offerings and babysitting for neighbors, although these opportunities are not consistent. On average, Novi earns $1 per day, a meager sum that falls far short of covering her school expenses.

Made Novianti is currently in grade 10, with one year and seven months remaining until completion. The monthly school fee is 580,000 IDR, resulting in a total requirement of 11,020,000 IDR.

As a single mum with kids (11 & 7) staying at the Bali Dynasty was by far the best decision I made all holiday. I stayed here for 3 of my 9 nights in Bali and I wish I stayed here longer. The hotel is kid paradise, the kids club was sensational, older kids club area had air hockey, rock climbing wall, play stations, pool tables etc - the kids club staff were fantastic. The highlight of this hotel in my opinion are the activities and competitions put on by the ‘motivators’, they get both kids and adults involved and will have you in stitches of laugher. The hotel has happy hour twice a day, reasonable priced food and drinks, most nights there is a buffet dinner with entertainment. This hotel is absolutely perfect for families with kids up to the age of 16. I cannot recommend enough and cannot wait to come back. Anonymous

Kids club was amazing for 8-year-old. Very attentive staff and good mix of activities to keep kids interested. Looking forward to next year when you get one will be 4 too and able to attend without babysitter.
