Tumpek Wayang

Tumpek Wayang is a cherished and sacred festival within Balinese Hindu culture, celebrated on the island every six months. This captivating festival unites puppeteers in a series of purification rituals, known as "ruwatan," designed to cleanse their bodies and minds. Beyond its spiritual significance, Tumpek Wayang holds a special place in the hearts of the locals for several reasons.

One of the pivotal roles of Tumpek Wayang is its connection to various transitions in the Balinese traditional calendar, linking the days of Saniscara, Kajeng, Kilown, and Wayang. As a transitional point, this holiday carries immense sacred importance for the Balinese people.

Another key aspect that makes Tumpek Wayang exceptional is its association with the birth of Lord Kala. Local mythology suggests that the birth of Kala may have arisen from an unexpected union between the divine Shiva and Uma goddess. It's important to note that there are variations in this myth, but they all revolve around the union of Shiva and Uma. This is why each Tumpek Wayang celebration involves purification rites, culminating in the iconic puppet show known as 'Sapuh Leger.'

When you find yourself in Bali during Tumpek Wayang, keep an eye out for the enchanting puppet shows staged at various locations. Take the opportunity to interact with the locals, and you'll gain valuable insights into their rich culture and traditions. Tumpek Wayang is not just a festival; it's a cultural treasure that brings the community together to celebrate and honor their heritage. This year Tumpek Wayang will be celebrated on November 25th at all temples around the island.

Charity Update: Bali Children Project

This month, we will be supporting a child named Dayu.

Dayu, 17, is the youngest of three in Badung. Her older sister is married, while her older brother got furloughed due to the pandemic and can only work as a laborer until now. Although tourism has been picking up in Bali, the job opportunities are still very much limited. Dayu is in her final year or the 12th grade. This means she only has 8 months left until she could graduate from the senior high school. Dayu almost dropped out last year, but fortunately she got sponsored for a while so she could pay off her outstanding fees. Unfortunately, her sponsor had to stop and she will be forced to drop out soon since her family cannot afford her school fees at all. Students cannot stay in school if they owe fees, or, if they graduate in debt to the school, they do not receive a diploma. Dayu’s parents only work as rice-field laborers or daily workers. They barely earn enough to cover their living expenses. They had hoped for her brother to help paying for Dayu’s school expenses, but the pandemic shattered their dream. Dayu aspires to work in a hotel. She interned in a hotel earlier this year for six months and she enjoyed the work there. Dayu’s hobby is cooking. She chose the badminton club as her extra-curricular activity. Her favorite subject is Balinese Language. Since her family only has one motorbike that is used by her brother or parents for their work, Dayu gets a lift from her friend who goes to the same school.

This was our 8th visit and Bali Dynasty did not disappoint. The room we stayed in was comfortable although the bathroom looked a little tired. The staff was amazing. No request was too much. From the moment we checked in to the when we checked out we were made to feel welcome. The spa offers a good variety of treatments to suit everyone’s needs. The newly renovated kids club looks amazing. The bfast has good variety and the staff will try to accommodate any requests. The teamed meals could be better but overall still pleasant. This was our first stop in Bali (family of 7) and only spent 2 nights here, however it was one of our favourite places to stay. The staff were super helpful & friendly, there was great variety when it came to food options, and it was easy to walk everywhere. The village tour in the morning was great too. We loved our time as a huge group at Bali Dynasty. The grounds are beautiful. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly. The all day activities for little kids and big kids (adults) are awesome! Pools are lovely. Swim up pool bar excellent! Services and restaurants are excellent also! Location brilliant too! We had a family lagoon access room along with 6 of our group members. When the main pool got busy, we would just hang out as a group at our own pool with a bar! Such a good set up for groups. G McB
