Bali Art Festival
The Bali Arts Festival kicked off the return of the full live program with an extraordinary parade on the streets of Denpasar, in front of the Bajra Sandhi Monument June 12, 2022. This stunning opening event marked the beginning of a month-long celebration of Balinese culture, including art, music and literature, across the island. Held annually, the Bali Arts Festival islocally known as PestaKesenian Bali and was first held in 1979 by the late Professor Ida Bagus Mantra. It is the cultural highlight of the year, where for a whole month all aspects of art are on display. Everything from traditional dances, costume parades, art displays and exhibitions and musical performances are expected here as different banjars (village communities), sanggars (art groups) and districts compete against one another.
Bali Arts Festival 2022 will feature 16.000 artists and 200 art groups. It is the best place for visitors and residents alike to witness aspects of local culture otherwise difficult to see or find around the island, as all agglomerate in this one destination.
Every year, the festival holds a different theme, hoping to explore different creative ideas or cultural components – this also adds some variety to this cultural extravaganza. The theme for 2022 is “Danu Kerthi: HuluningAmreta” (Glorifying the Water of the Source of Life), bringing awareness to the role and importance of water in Bali. The 2022 mark’s the festival’s 44th year and the return of a full in-person program from 12 June – 10 July 2022. The majority of events and performances are held at the Taman WerdhiBudaya Arts Center in Denpasar, but the program also extends to the Indonesian Institution of Arts (ISI) Denpasar, the Bajra Sandhi Monument, amongst other venues in Bali’s capital.
The majority of the events will take place at Taman WerdhiBudaya Art Centre at 7PM and will showcase an impressive array of artistic performances. Another venue to note is KalanganAyodya, also a stage at the Arts Center. (Source: https://www.nowbali.co.id/)
Bali Kite Festival 2022
The Bali Kite Festival is an annual festival held on the island from July to October. The event highlights Bali’s unique culture, drawing thousands of visitors each year.
The timing of the kite festival in July and August is the key, as this marks the start of the windy season in Bali. In addition to this, both months are peak season for tourists, which means that attendance is full, making it a fun and interactive festival.
The festival is hosted across several locations on the island of Bali. The opening and closing events take place on Padanggalak Beach, which is on the northern side of Sanur. Other locations of the festival would include Masceti Beach which is on the Gianyar town; Ungasan; Mertasari Beach, Sanur; Abiansemal, Badung; Klungklung, Pelangi; Ungasan, Bukit Peninsula; Peliatan, Ubud; Marga, Tabanan; Denpasar and Kuta.
For those who would like to plan in advance, it may be a little hard, as the dates are scheduled in accordance with current weather conditions. Therefore, it is best to have a general idea of the dates and then check with your hotel when you arrive to see if they are aware of the confirmed dates.
Once the dates are set, locals gather to compete with foreigners in kite flying. If you head down to the beach to watch or take part, you will see a sky filled with kites of all shapes, sizes and colours soaring above the crowded beaches.
History has it that the festival started off as a colourful fanfare to thank the gods for bountiful harvests and fertility, but has since grown to become one of the most remarkable events on Bali’s event calendar. Prizes are given to the most distinct and creative kites. If you love kites and are a fan of the outdoors, then the Bali Kite Festival is perfect for you.
