Nyepi Day - Mandatory Rules & Guidelines

HARI RAYA NYEPI

Thursday, 19 March 2026

Hari Raya Nyepi marks the Balinese Hindu New Year, celebrating the transition to the Caka Year of 1947. This sacred occasion involves several days of profound rituals and ceremonies throughout the island of Bali. We kindly request that you observe these local customs with respect and decorum.

SCHEDULE OF CEREMONIES

  • Monday, 16 March 2026: Melasti (Purification Ceremony)
    • This is a key preparation for the New Year, where sacred objects, statues, and keris are carried in colorful processions to the beach for ritual cleansing.
    • Pilgrims cleanse themselves in the sea while prayers and flowers fill the air.
    • Please observe this ceremony from a respectful distance.

  • Wednesday, 18 March 2026: The Eve of Nyepi
    • Tawur Agung Ceremony: Performed during the darkest night of the new moon, priests offer prayers and sacrifices to harmonize the forces of good and evil.
    • Ogoh-Ogoh Statue Burning (5:00 p.m.): Join us in front of the Kertagosa Room to help carry papier-mache statues around the hotel to ward off evil spirits.
    • Participants will receive a special Balinese Arak drink, a headband, and a sarong.
    • The procession concludes on the beach with the burning of the statues to symbolize the banishment of bad spirits.

  • Friday, 20 March 2026: Ngembak Geni
    • The second day of the Caka New Year is a time for visiting others and practicing forgiveness (Sima Krama/Dharma Santi).
    • The Pasar Majelangu market will be held at Kuta Beach.
    • Most shops and restaurants typically open after 12:00 noon, though many may remain closed.
